MIAMI – Cuban exiles and members of the Miami community will hold a prayer vigil in Coral Gables as part of the International Day of Prayer for Freedom in Cuba taking place on Tuesday, November 22, 2011. The event is being organized by the Cuban Resistance Assembly.

The purpose of this effort is to show solidarity with “Resistance Day” in Cuba, designated as the 24th of each month by the democracy activists of the Island’s Orlando Zapata Tamayo National Civic Resistance and Civil Disobedience Front. The Front is a national coalition which brings together nonviolent freedom activists across Cuba.

In Miami, the vigil in solidarity with the Cuban Resistance will take place at Ponce Circle Park, located on Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Palermo (2810 Ponce de Leon Boulevard) in the City of Coral Gables. The Park is just blocks south of Coral Way.

Vigils and other events were being planned in Miami, New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles, and Houston as well as internationally in Uruguay, Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico, Colombia, and Spain.

Inside Cuba, the Front organizes nonviolent civil resistance actions in public places in order to demand freedom for the Cuban people. Recent spikes in repression by the Communist regime are a response to increasing levels of pro-democracy activism and visibility, in an attempt to keep everyday citizens from offering their support to the Resistance on the Island.

The Cuban Resistance Assembly is a coalition of over 50 pro-democracy groups, including members based in Cuba and abroad.
